certainly without any unnecessary interference from any doctor who

I wasn't trying to be a "martyr"... and I wasn't just ignorantly trying
to "do this for a personal challenge"...as many of my female colleagues
at the time seemed to suspect. I simply knew in my heart... and from

it was a MUST, if I was committed to the health of my baby and the
success of our breastfeeding relationship... among other things.

So what happened next...?

I was booked in to give birth to my baby in a hospital.

I had made every attempt to stack the odds in my favour for a natural
intervention free birth. I had made sure that I would be attended only
by a midwife in the hospital and had specifically requested that no
OBGYN or doctor be allowed into the room unless it was an absolute
critical emergency. I had written all my birth preferences down in
black and white, giving this "Birth Plan" to my midwife so that there
would be no question marks about the way we wanted things done. I had
arranged for a Doula to support me and my fiance.

I had all my bases covered.... or so I thought....

Even though I had taken all these steps... and made very clear plans
and preparations, I became shockingly aware on my admission into the
hospital birth suite that there was just so little flexibility to work
within the hospitals protocols and procedures... despite what my
partner or I were insisting on!

I was subject to continuous electronic monitoring and forced to remain
flat on my back on the bed (making me feel like I was completely losing
control, when I had in fact been coping well by moving around freely up
until that point). I had to negotiate when I could and couldn't be in
the bath, or the shower... I had to negotiate the position I would be
in for delivering my baby... I had to negotiate the amount of time the
hospital would "allow" me for a natural third stage prior to injecting
me with synthetic oxytocin, I had to negotiate how long they would wait
to clamp and cut the cord...

... Everything was a NEGOTIATION!

I can tell you... it was downright frustrating, exhausting and
infuriating... not something I wanted to be doing at this point in
time...

I just wanted to be able to enjoy the experience and have the time and
space to bond with this precious little angel in my arms.

So what was the outcome of this experience...?

Well... I gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl, without any
drugs, without any interventions, without any complications... but I
was left feeling as though no-one had any respect for my basic human
rights of free-will, and my power had been taken away.

before... the experience itself wasn't actually "that bad". You may
have had a minor intervention or complication but nothing overly
